A vessel’s risk score is rarely determined by a single factor. Instead, it is an aggregation of structural integrity, regulatory compliance, and environmental stressors:
- Vessel Age & Structural Fatigue: Aging hulls are more prone to metal fatigue, corrosion, and engine failures. Modern maritime standards strictly penalize vessels exceeding 20 years of age unless supported by rigorous drydocking and specialized survey reports.
- Flag State Compliance: The “Flag of Convenience” phenomenon significantly impacts risk. Vessels registered in jurisdictions that lack strict Port State Control oversight are statistically more likely to suffer detentions, safety breaches, and insurance disputes.
